Did you know that Cancer has affected the office staff at South Giles Utility District? Miss Virginia Hanserd was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2011, and is now a 5 year survivor, and Mrs. Cathy Dradt was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2014, and is now a 2 year survivor.
Ovarian and Breast Cancer are ‘sister cancers’, in that if you have one and test positive for the BRCA gene, you are at a greater risk of getting the other. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, and October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. On October 22nd, Cathy will be participating in the Nashville, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk/Run, and is asking for anyone who would like to help sponsor her and her team, to follow the link, http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=77439&pg=personal&px=35341619, to make any donation you can. No amount is too small, and if we can stomp out one cancer, we can make way to stomp out the next.
If you think about it, you KNOW someone who has been affected by Cancer. Breast Cancer affects 1 in 8 women. Early detection is the key to stomping it. It is detectable by self-exam, mammograms, and ultrasounds. If you detect a change in your breast (man or woman), see you physician immediately. Ovarian Cancer is not easy to detect. It is normally found in the latter stages and for some, this is too late. If you have changes in your body, seek medical attention. Only you know your body best.
For further information, contact the American Cancer Society. They are available 24/7 at 1-800-227-2345.
